Elissa Epel of the University of California at San Francisco, US, has now looked at the effect of stress on the cell. Psychological stress may be enough to age a woman’s chromosomes by 10 years, the new study suggests.

Epel says she is not surprised. “I believe that how we perceive the world can matter more than our objective reality,” she says. “If we feel stress it needs to be taken seriously because it may be embodied at the cellular level.”
